
Procrastination is independently tied to sleep disturbance, and this association is partly explained by a tendency toward eveningness, being a night owl, according to a cross-sectional study of nearly 3,000 Japanese adults published in Sleep Medicine.
The link between putting things off and sleeping poorly has been noted before, but it was unclear whether the connection held after accounting for ADHD traits, sleep hygiene habits, and lifestyle factors. The new study by Masumi Osao and colleagues at Tokyo Medical University, the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute, and the Institute of Science Tokyo is among the first to test whether chronotype, an individual’s natural preference for morning or evening activity, acts as a bridge between procrastination and poor sleep.
What They Found
The researchers analyzed data from 2,971 adults aged 18 to 59 who completed an online survey. Participants filled out validated questionnaires covering procrastination behavior, sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, or PSQI), chronotype (Reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire), and ADHD traits (Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale).
Even after adjusting for age, sex, lifestyle factors, sleep hygiene practices, and ADHD symptoms, the results showed:
- A significant direct association between procrastination and sleep disturbance: effect size 0.43 (95% CI [0.30, 0.55], p < 0.001). This means procrastinators scored worse on sleep quality regardless of their chronotype or other factors.
- A smaller but significant indirect effect through eveningness: 0.07 (95% CI [0.05, 0.10]). This suggests that part of the reason procrastinators sleep worse is that they tend to be evening types, who in turn are more prone to sleep problems.
- The overall mediation model, procrastination leading to greater eveningness, which in turn contributes to sleep disturbance, was confirmed via bootstrapping with 5,000 resamples.
A particularly revealing finding emerged when the researchers split the sample by ADHD traits. The mediation pathway (procrastination to eveningness to sleep disturbance) was present in participants without elevated ADHD traits but was absent in those with ADHD traits. This suggests that the mechanism linking procrastination to poor sleep differs depending on a person’s ADHD profile.
Why It Matters
Procrastination is a near-universal behavior, but for some people it becomes a chronic pattern that interferes with daily functioning and health. Sleep disturbance, in turn, is linked to a wide range of physical and mental health outcomes including cardiovascular disease, impaired immune function, depression, and cognitive decline.
The finding that eveningness partially mediates the procrastination-sleep link points to a potential intervention target. Behavioral strategies aimed at shifting chronotype, such as morning light exposure, consistent wake times, and limiting evening screen use, might be especially helpful for procrastinators who find themselves stuck in a cycle of late-night activity and poor sleep.
The study also highlights the importance of considering ADHD traits when addressing sleep problems in people who procrastinate. In individuals with ADHD, eveningness did not explain the link between procrastination and sleep disturbance, which may reflect different underlying mechanisms such as impulsivity or intrinsic circadian dysregulation. Clinicians may need different strategies for patients with and without ADHD when tackling procrastination-related sleep issues.
Limits
This study has several important limitations. First, the cross-sectional design captures associations at a single point in time, meaning causation cannot be inferred. It remains possible that sleep disturbance leads to more procrastination, or that a third factor drives both. Second, all data were collected via self-report questionnaires, which are subject to recall bias and may not perfectly reflect objective sleep or behavior. Third, the sample consisted entirely of Japanese adults recruited through a web survey, which may limit generalizability to other cultures, age groups, or clinical populations.
Bottom Line
Procrastination is independently associated with sleep disturbance, and a tendency toward eveningness partly explains this relationship, although the mediation pathway was only evident in people without ADHD traits. The findings suggest that chronotype-focused interventions could help some procrastinators improve their sleep, while those with ADHD traits may need a different approach. Further longitudinal and intervention studies are needed to confirm these patterns and test causal pathways.
