
A Chinese company has demonstrated what it calls the world’s first integrated brain-to-robot platform, allowing users to control humanoid robots, robotic arms, and even a robotic dog using only electrical signals picked up from the scalp.
BrainCo demonstrated the system at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai this week. A user wearing an electroencephalogram (EEG) headband was shown controlling a robotic arm to pick up a cup and an apple, no joystick, no keyboard, no voice command. The headset detects natural electrical activity from the brain, AI algorithms decode the user’s intended action, and a command is sent wirelessly to the connected robot.
The non-invasive approach distinguishes BrainCo’s system from companies like Neuralink, which requires surgical implantation of electrodes. EEG signals are weaker and noisier than signals captured directly from brain tissue, posing an accuracy challenge that BrainCo’s algorithms must overcome to move beyond controlled demonstrations.
“The embodied AI industry has made remarkable progress on what robots can do on their own. We believe the next decisive frontier is about how robots understand the humans they work with,” said Nyx He, senior vice-president at BrainCo.
The company also framed the platform as a solution to a data problem. Humanoid robots need large volumes of real-world training data to learn tasks humans find intuitive, and that data is scarce. A brain-to-robot system can capture natural human intent during demonstrations, generating richer datasets for training robot brains, combining real-world execution, human demonstration, and virtual simulation into a single pipeline.
HSBC analysts have noted that China’s humanoid robot sector lacks the high-quality data needed for advanced robotic control, and that commercial deployment remains years away. BrainCo’s platform, still at the demonstration stage, has not released detailed performance metrics or accuracy data outside its controlled environment.
Nonetheless, the demonstration signals a growing convergence between brain-computer interface research and the physical AI industry, both of which are racing toward the same goal: machines that can understand and respond to human intent without explicit programming.
