Your Body Cools Down to Sleep. Climate Change Keeps It Warm.

Before sleep can begin, the body must shed heat. Core temperature drifts downward through the evening, and that slow cooling signals the brain that the day is over and sleep can begin. Unless the night is hot. Then the room holds the heat the body is trying to release, the cooling never happens, and sleep that should arrive easily turns into hours of staring at the ceiling.

That scene is becoming more common across the planet, and the evidence that hot nights cost real sleep is now hard to ignore.

Why a warm room fights your sleep

Sleep is built around temperature. The body’s internal thermostat drops before sleep begins and stays low through the night while the deepest, most restorative stages of sleep do their work. Warm ambient air disrupts that process from both ends. Falling asleep takes longer, staying asleep becomes a struggle, and waking up rested is no longer guaranteed.

Heat leaves the body mostly through the skin, and that transfer depends on the air around you being cooler than you are. When the bedroom is hot, the gradient narrows, the body cannot unload its heat efficiently, and core temperature stays higher than it should. The brain, waiting for its cooling cue, keeps the system alert. The result is delayed sleep onset, more awakenings, and shorter, shallower sleep through the night.

What the numbers show

A Climate Central analysis of 2020 through 2025 put the global toll at close to 56 hours of lost sleep per person per year. Across 253 American cities, residents lost roughly 36 hours of nightly rest a year. The most affected states, Arizona, California, Florida, and Nevada, shed 7 to 9 hours of heat-related rest annually, while the steepest losses worldwide were recorded in the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and western parts of Africa.

Since the early 1970s, the sleep lost to rising temperatures has at least doubled in nearly every city examined. The nights that steal sleep are no longer occasional anomalies; they are a permanent feature of summer, and increasingly of spring and fall as well.

A separate study in the journal One Earth, built on more than 7 million sleep records, found that people slept about 14 minutes less on very warm nights, defined as nighttime temperatures above roughly 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). Even at more modest levels, nights above about 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) raised the chance of getting fewer than 7 hours of sleep. Bedtimes drifted later and night totals shrank as temperatures climbed. The most troubling result: people show little sign of getting used to warmer nights. Tolerance never seems to build, so rest stays exposed as nights get hotter.

A few lost minutes on a single night may sound trivial. But a string of warm nights piles up, and over the weeks it reshapes mood, thinking, and daily performance. A June 2026 heat wave in the United Kingdom made the point vividly: in a YouGov survey, 65 percent of adults said the heat kept them from sleeping. Nearly half of those people reported losing 3 or more hours of sleep per night.

The effects spill into the next day. In a 2016 Boston heat wave, researchers tracked 44 young adults for a study in PLOS Medicine. Those living without air conditioning endured higher indoor temperatures and scored worse on tests of attention, processing speed, and working memory. The study was small and limited to young adults, but it illustrates a basic point: after a hot night, daily functioning suffers.

Who is most exposed

The burden of hot nights is not shared evenly. Older adults are more vulnerable because their bodies are less efficient at regulating temperature and because their sleep is already lighter and more fragile. People who live in hotter regions face more nights above the thresholds that matter. Households with no dependable cooling, tighter budgets that rule out air conditioning, and people already struggling with sleep all absorb a bigger share of the damage.

Air conditioning helps, but it is not a universal answer. It is expensive to install and run, and access is unequal. Even with a unit running, a hot night outside can still interfere with rest, because bedrooms are not always cooled to the level the body needs. Cooling is a tool, not a guarantee.

What can be done

A good bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet, and on hot nights the cool part matters most. Run air conditioning or a fan when it is safe to do so. Wear light, breathable sleep clothing, and choose bedding that can be added to or stripped away through the night as the temperature shifts.

Limit heat exposure before bed. Heavy exercise close to bedtime raises body temperature and slows the cooling process, so save intense workouts for earlier in the day. A lukewarm shower before bed can help the body release heat; a very hot shower does the opposite. Stay hydrated during the day, because hot weather increases fluid loss, but keep intake light in the hour before bed so bathroom trips do not fragment your sleep.

When hot nights keep wrecking your sleep, when daytime drowsiness becomes the norm, or when rest problems begin to interfere with your health, your job, your studies, or your safety, it is worth talking to a doctor. Hot nights are becoming more frequent as the climate shifts, and each one taxes sleep. The body was built to cool down before it rests, and the air around us is increasingly refusing to cooperate. Keeping the bedroom cool and protecting the hours before bed are the best defenses available, for the nights now and for the warmer ones ahead.
