Europe’s planet-hunting telescope passes final pre-launch electrical tests

ESA’s PLATO mission has cleared its last major ground test before shipment to the launch site, completing a round of electromagnetic compatibility checks inside a specialized chamber that mimics the silence and isolation of space.

The tests took place inside the Maxwell Test Chamber at ESTEC, ESA’s technology center in the Netherlands. The chamber is essentially a giant Faraday cage, its metal walls, floor, and ceiling block all external electromagnetic signals, while foam spikes lining the 9-meter (30-foot) interior absorb electrical noise and sound. The effect is a near-perfect simulation of the electromagnetic emptiness a spacecraft experiences once it leaves Earth.

Engineers sealed the chamber, then remotely powered on PLATO’s electronics and ran each system through its paces. The goal was to ensure that the telescope’s instruments, power systems, and communications modules do not create unwanted “crosstalk”, electromagnetic interference that could corrupt data, confuse sensors, or damage sensitive components.

In the vacuum of space, electronics behave differently than they do in a standard lab. Heat dissipates by radiation rather than convection. Voltages can behave unpredictably. Without chamber testing, subtle interference between subsystems might go undetected until it is too late to fix.

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is designed to find Earth-like planets orbiting Sun-like stars in their habitable zones. It will stare at thousands of stars, watching for the faint dimming that signals a planet crossing in front of its host, and measure stellar oscillations to determine each star’s mass, age, and composition with high precision.

The successful electromagnetic compatibility test was the final item on a grueling pre-launch checklist. Since January, PLATO has survived vibration and acoustic tests that simulate the violence of launch, and spent a month inside ESTEC’s Large Space Simulator, which exposed the spacecraft to the extreme temperature swings and vacuum it will face in orbit.

With all major tests now complete, PLATO is on track for launch aboard an Ariane 6 rocket, with Arianespace targeting March 2027.
