
The question of whether workers need AI skills has shifted from a matter of career optionality to one of baseline employability. A growing body of employer surveys and labor market data indicates that organizations across industries, not just technology companies, now expect candidates to demonstrate at least a working familiarity with AI tools and concepts.
The change is happening quickly. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, more than one-third of entry-level job postings in 2026 now require some level of AI competency, nearly triple the share reported in fall 2025. Lightcast, a labor market analytics firm, reports that 51 percent of AI-related job postings are now outside traditional IT roles, in marketing, human resources, operations, and business development. LinkedIn data shows that job postings requiring AI skills have grown 3.5 times faster than overall postings since 2021.
What employers mean by AI skills is also evolving. The demand is not primarily for machine learning engineers or data scientists, which remain specialized roles. The broader workforce demand is for AI literacy: understanding how generative AI tools produce responses, recognizing when outputs may be inaccurate or biased, and exercising judgment about when to rely on AI and when to override it. A PwC survey found that 74 percent of workers are willing to learn new skills or retrain to remain employable, but access to affordable training remains uneven.
The wage premium for AI-competent workers is substantial. PwC’s 2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer reported a 56 percent wage premium for jobs requiring AI skills, up from 25 percent the previous year. Lightcast found a 28 percent premium. The gap reflects a labor market where supply of AI-literate workers has not kept pace with demand, even as the definition of AI literacy broadens beyond technical specialties.
The shift creates a structural challenge for employers as well as workers. Organizations are deploying AI tools faster than they are implementing training programs, leaving many employees to learn on their own. Some companies have responded with internal upskilling initiatives: Amazon, JPMorgan Chase, and AT&T have committed billions to reskilling existing workforces rather than hiring entirely new teams. But the GSMA’s recent report on workforce preparedness noted that most organizations still lack a formal framework for evaluating or certifying AI competency among non-technical staff.
The broader dynamic suggests that AI skills are following the trajectory of digital literacy in the 1990s and early 2000s: once a differentiator, soon a minimum requirement, and eventually a silent assumption in most professional roles. The question for both employers and education systems is how fast the transition will happen, and how many workers will be left behind in the gap.
