Apple Reference Image could certify that an iPhone photo is real

Apple is developing a photo provenance system that would let iPhone owners prove an image was actually captured by the phone’s camera. References to the feature, called Apple Reference Image, were found in the privacy disclosure included with iOS 27 beta 5. The feature is not live, but the description in the beta is detailed enough to show how Apple intends it to work.

The system is opt-in at the point of capture. A new Reference mode would be available in the Camera app, and only images taken in that mode would embed the provenance data needed for later authentication. Tapping the Reference badge on an authenticated image would send the photo, the sensor’s signature data, the capture window, and the sensor’s unique hardware identifiers to Private Cloud Compute, Apple’s cloud environment built around privacy-preserving processing. The service would judge whether the camera genuinely captured the image, assign it a unique ID, and return an authenticated version to the device. Apple says the process yields sensor readings, a hash, and an assessment verdict, and that the photograph itself is not retained.

The design deliberately avoids certifying ordinary photos. An image taken in the standard Photo mode would not contain the provenance information required for authentication, so a user could not pull an old picture out of their library, or an AI-generated file with rewritten metadata, and have it certified after the fact. The distinction is central to the system’s credibility: authentication begins during capture, before the file passes through any application that could modify it.

Apple’s descriptions also hint at video support, since the disclosure covers photos or videos as well as uncropped footage. Authenticated photos would be viewable on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with the Reference badge clickable on the Mac. Apple would also be able to refuse authentication for images from a sensor that may have been compromised, and to retroactively revoke authentications previously issued for that sensor, a mechanism similar to revoking a compromised digital certificate.

The concept overlaps with the C2PA Content Credentials standard, a cryptographic provenance format already used by camera makers including Leica, Sony, and Nikon, and adopted by Google for its Pixel 10 line. Apple has not confirmed whether Reference Image will interoperate with C2PA, and third-party software would need to read and verify the authentication records for the system to survive the messiness of online sharing, where social networks routinely strip metadata when images are resized.

The feature appears aimed at professionals who need to establish origin: photojournalists, investigators, insurance assessors, and marketplace sellers. It would not prove that everything visible in a picture is truthful, only that the file originated from a genuine iPhone camera in Reference mode and passed Apple’s check. A missing authentication would not mean an image is fake, since Reference mode is optional and most casual photos will never carry it.

Apple has not announced the feature, and its presence in a beta is no guarantee it will ship. The setting is disabled by default in the current beta, and Apple could drop or redesign it before iOS 27 reaches the public this fall.
