Amazon is running a preorder promotion on Samsung’s newly announced Galaxy Z Fold 8 line that throws in a $350 gift card with no trade-in required and no carrier contract, an approach that stands out in an industry where most foldable phone discounts are locked behind multi-year service agreements.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung’s redesigned book-style foldable with a wider 4:3 aspect ratio when opened, starts at $1,900. Preorders through Amazon include a $350 digital gift card that can be spent on anything on the platform, not just phone accessories. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, the more traditional tall-and-thin model, carries the same $350 offer. The smaller Galaxy Z Flip 8 comes with a $200 gift card. All three devices ship on August 7.
The promotion is notable for what it avoids. Carrier deals on foldables typically require a 36-month installment plan and a premium-tier service contract, effectively locking the buyer in for three years to spread the $1,900-plus cost. Amazon’s offer requires no such commitment, the phone is purchased unlocked and the gift card is effectively a discount that can be applied immediately to any other purchase.
The foldable price ceiling
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 arrives at a moment of pricing tension in the foldable market. Apple’s rumored iPhone Ultra, expected to enter the foldable segment, has already been cited by analysts as a potential catalyst that could push foldable prices even higher. Samsung’s own position is complicated by the fact that its wider Fold 8 design is an entirely new form factor, not a simple iteration of the Fold 7, meaning it competes for a buyer’s attention against both other foldables and traditional flagship phones.
Amazon’s willingness to offer a $350 unencumbered credit suggests the company sees enough margin, or enough strategic value in capturing the foldable phone buyer, to absorb the promotion cost. For consumers, the math is straightforward: the gift card brings the effective price of the Z Fold 8 down to $1,550, the Z Fold 8 Ultra to roughly the same, and the Z Flip 8 to a more accessible entry point.
Preorders are open now through Amazon with shipments beginning August 7.
