Instagram tests new ways to let users control what their algorithm shows

Instagram is testing new ways for users to interact with “Your Algorithm”, a feature that lets people specify which topics and content types they want to see more or less of.

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri previewed the upcoming changes in a recent post, saying the company wants to “evolve Your Algorithm from a setting to something that feels central to your experience on Instagram.” He noted that some features are in testing, some are coming soon, and some may not ship.

Three interface changes were shown:

  • Pull-down access in the main feed, pulling down in the feed will bring up the “Your Algorithm” menu directly.
  • Swipe-up from a Reel, swiping up from a Reel triggers a similar customization prompt.
  • Per-Reel feedback buttons, buttons beneath each Reel let users indicate whether they want to see more content like it or not.

These build on the original “Your Algorithm” launch in December 2025, which has been gradually expanding across the app.

The user response has been pointed. The top comments on Mosseri’s post all made the same request: “We just want our algorithm to show the people we follow.” The feedback highlights a recurring tension between Instagram’s push toward algorithmically curated discovery and many users’ desire for a simpler, chronological feed from accounts they have chosen to follow.

The changes represent Instagram’s attempt to strike a balance: giving users more visible control over the recommendation engine without abandoning the algorithmic feed model that drives engagement and advertising revenue.
