iOS 27’s Quiet Upgrades: Maps Redesign, Smarter Wallet, and Better Find My

Apple’s iOS 27, unveiled at WWDC and now available in developer beta, brings a long list of refinements across Maps, Wallet, Find My, and Apple Music, less flashy than the new Siri AI overhaul, but collectively the most substantial point-release update in years.

Apple Maps gains improved Flyover 3D views with more detailed visuals and smoother navigation. A new Local Lists feature surfaces trending recommendations for restaurants and attractions, aiming to reduce users’ reliance on Google Maps, Instagram, and TikTok for local discovery.

Wallet becomes a trip headquarters

The Wallet app sees the most changes. A new bill-splitting feature uses the iPhone camera to scan receipts; Apple Intelligence identifies items, calculates each person’s share including tax and tip, and facilitates repayment through Messages or Wallet. Users can now digitize physical membership and loyalty cards by pointing the camera at a barcode, with cards also supported on Apple Watch and pinnable to the Smart Stack.

A revamped hotel key experience, for participating properties, unlocks rooms and amenities, displays trip details, activity schedules, service information, and real-time updates directly in the app.

Find My gains granular control

Location sharing becomes more flexible: users can share for custom durations, minutes, hours, days, or until a specific date and time. A new pause feature temporarily stops sharing with individual contacts until the end of the day, intended for scenarios like keeping a surprise party secret.

Apple Pay gets a redesign

The checkout interface is redesigned for easier swiping between payment cards, showing rewards balances, debit account balances, and available pay-later options in one view. Later in 2026, users will be able to add funds directly to eligible debit cards through Wallet or during checkout. A new Tap to Share feature lets customers share loyalty accounts, shipping addresses, and contact details with participating merchants using existing Tap to Pay on iPhone hardware.

Music and Podcasts

Apple Music adds lyrics translation and phonetic pronunciation across new language pairings, an AutoMix feature for smoother song transitions, and hi-res lossless audio on Apple TV 4K. Apple Podcasts gains search-within-show functionality and brings video podcasts to Mac and Apple TV for the first time.

iCloud Shared Albums go high-res

Shared Albums now support full-resolution photos, additional file types, emoji reactions, improved activity feeds, and temporary albums that don’t permanently consume iCloud storage. People without Apple devices can contribute via the web.

The public beta arrives next month, ahead of the full release later in the northern autumn.
