
Samsung Display has begun mass-producing laptop OLED panels that reach 1,600 nits of peak brightness, the first commercially available panels to meet VESA’s new DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification.
The certification, introduced by the Video Electronics Standards Association on July 8, requires at least 1,400 nits of peak brightness in a 10-percent window and 700 nits across the full screen while maintaining black levels of 0.0005 nits or lower. That is roughly 40 percent brighter than the previous True Black 1000 tier.
Samsung exceeds the requirement by a meaningful margin. The company’s panel reaches 1,600 nits in a smaller window, more than 40 percent above the 1,100-nit ceiling of conventional single-layer OLED laptop displays.
The tandem architecture
The brightness leap comes from a structural change in how the panel is built. Tandem OLED stacks two organic emissive layers instead of the conventional one. Because both layers emit light simultaneously, the panel can deliver higher brightness at the same current, or run each layer at lower stress for the same brightness output. Samsung says the tandem panel lasts more than twice as long as a single-stack OLED under typical laptop operating brightness, with new organic materials further improving efficiency and stability.
The power efficiency gain is significant for laptops. At the same brightness level, the tandem panel consumes less power than a single-stack OLED, extending battery life, a meaningful factor for the premium portable market where these displays will first appear.
Who’s building with it
Lenovo’s Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition received True Black 1400 certification on July 8, making it the first laptop to ship with the new panel. Samsung says Asus, Dell, and MSI will follow with their own certified models, expected from the second half of 2026 through 2027.
The panel arrives at a moment when laptop display brightness has become a competitive differentiator for premium productivity and content-creation machines. Video editors and photographers working with HDR content benefit from the higher peak brightness and the perfect blacks that OLED technology delivers.
Samsung will showcase the panel at K-Display 2026 in Seoul from July 22 to 24. The South Korean manufacturer’s display division operates independently from its consumer-electronics arm, which ranked among the world’s largest smartphone and memory-chip suppliers.
