Nvidia introduced a tool at SIGGRAPH 2026 that addresses a growing blind spot in the media ecosystem: the inability to tell, quickly and at scale, whether a video was shot in the real world or generated entirely by AI.
The Synthetic Video Detector, released as a NIM microservice, analyses footage frame by frame and assigns a probability score for whether the content is AI-generated. On uncompressed 1080p video, it achieves 92% accuracy and processes each frame in as little as 22 milliseconds on RTX hardware, fast enough for live broadcast workflows. Accuracy drops to 87% at 15% compression and 82% at 50% compression, reflecting the challenge that platform-level compression (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram) poses to detection models by stripping away subtle artifacts.
Nvidia positions the detector as a complement to, not a replacement for, traditional verification. Editorial teams can use its scores to prioritize clips for review, flag questionable footage, or escalate for deeper forensic analysis. The latest model revision ranks at the top of the AIGVD Bench, an industry benchmark for synthetic media detection, with an AUC of 0.9614 and accuracy of 0.9453 on Nvidia’s internal test set.
The timing reflects a shift in the AI landscape. Video generation models have advanced to the point where photorealistic clips can be produced from text prompts at low cost. The same technology that enables creative tools also lowers the barrier for producing convincing misinformation, a fabricated clip during an election, a natural disaster, or a geopolitical crisis can circle the globe before human fact-checkers respond.
Nvidia plans to integrate the detector into Wowza’s Intelligence Video Framework, which serves more than 35,000 deployments across 170 countries. The company emphasized that the system is not a silver bullet, source verification, editorial judgment, and human oversight remain essential, but argued that automated detection at machine speed is becoming a necessary layer of defense.
