OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, an AI agent embedded directly inside ChatGPT that can execute complex, multi-step tasks across a user’s email, calendar, messaging apps, and code repositories, and stay with a single project for hours, completing it autonomously.
The product, powered by OpenAI’s latest GPT-5.6 model series, marks the company’s clearest attempt yet to reposition ChatGPT from a conversational chatbot into a persistent workplace platform. It arrives as OpenAI prepares for a potential initial public offering that could value the company at between $730 billion and $852 billion.
“The mission is to democratize the kind of agentic AI capabilities that OpenAI’s internal engineering tool, Codex, has already demonstrated,” Ty Geri, an OpenAI product manager who helped build ChatGPT Work, told VentureBeat. “Our internal adoption of Codex is literally an exponential curve across every single product function and every single use case.”
How it works
ChatGPT Work runs on a persistent cloud-based virtual machine that remains available regardless of device: desktop, web, or mobile. It uses OpenAI’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect with more than 1,400 plugins spanning Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, GitHub, and other workplace tools.
Users describe a desired outcome: “analyze this month’s budget variance” or “prepare a marketing campaign brief from these source materials,” and the agent breaks the task into smaller steps, gathers context from connected apps, and produces finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, or interactive websites.
A built-in “Plan mode” allows users to review the agent’s proposed approach before work begins, and the agent surfaces questions or requests approval for important actions along the way.
Use cases demonstrated
In a demonstration, Geri showed ChatGPT Work catching up on Slack and Teams messages, reading a calendar to identify scheduling conflicts, and rescheduling events, then coordinating bug-bash sessions across multiple teams. “That would have taken me 30 minutes at least,” he said.
Other demonstrated capabilities included identifying causes of user churn and generating product solutions, “things that we would have spent three months doing, we can now spend a week doing,” and autonomously executing test cases against defined specifications.
The agent can also build and host interactive websites directly from within ChatGPT Work, a feature the company calls Sites.
Availability and pricing
ChatGPT Work is rolling out first to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers, with Plus ($20 per month) and Business tiers following within days. OpenAI reports 900 million weekly active users, 50 million paying subscribers, and 92 percent of Fortune 500 companies as customers.
The product is available across desktop, web, and mobile. OpenAI said it would begin sunsetting its standalone Atlas browser, directing users to transition to ChatGPT.
Competitive landscape
ChatGPT Work enters a three-way race with Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, which reached general availability in April 2026, and Microsoft Copilot Cowork, which launched on June 16 built with Anthropic’s models. All three share a similar architectural bet: a persistent cloud agent connected to workplace tools via plugin ecosystems.
OpenAI’s differentiator is distribution: ChatGPT’s massive consumer base and Plus-tier pricing make the product accessible at a lower entry point than enterprise-focused competitors.
IPO context
The launch comes as OpenAI navigates an extraordinarily consequential financial moment. The company confidentially submitted an S-1 registration statement to the SEC last month. Its annualized revenue has surpassed $25 billion, growing four times faster than Alphabet and Meta did at comparable stages. Enterprise now accounts for more than 40 percent of revenue.
However, the company remains deeply unprofitable, with internal projections suggesting losses of $14 billion in 2026 and profitability not expected until around 2030. Anthropic, its chief rival, filed for its own IPO on June 1 at a $965 billion valuation.
GPT-5.6, the model powering ChatGPT Work, is available in three variants: Sol (maximum reasoning power), Luna (speed-optimized), and Terra (balanced for everyday use).
